today i was sort of wondering what got rival schools the "emo" label they seem to have been branded with. i mean, emo is a pretty meaningless, useless term by this point because it's become so overused, but nothing about rival schools to me matches up with any definition of emo i've ever heard. i mean, to me they seem pretty obviously to be "post-hadcore," if you had to assign them some label--the band's style has a lot of hardcore roots, not to mention members of the band were previously members of the gorilla biscuits and quicksand, major hardcore groups.
and while i'm on the topic, what is emo, anyways? is it the thrift store, hipster fashion? if so, it's cool. is it power-pop/punk music? if so, it's cool. or is it just a pitiful group of people who get together to whine and feel sorry for each other, using music as an excuse? if so, it pisses me off. people have been totally misinterpreting lots of bands and their music lately just to make them feel like they fit in, and i don't think i'm the only who's pissed off by it. i dunno, i guess i probably won't have to worry about it for very long, because this whining movement people are calling emo is getting pretty popular, and popularity has a way of killing things (grunge, britpunk, glam rock, hair metal).
wow, that was really random. sorry.
